“If humanity ever harnesses the energy of fire again, if humanity ever captures the energy of love, it will be the second time in history that we have discovered fire.” Pierre Teilhard de Chardin
As millions from around the globe gathered to witness a royal couple proclaim their love for each other, the preacher at their wedding proclaimed to the world,
“There’s power in love.
There’s power in love to help and heal when nothing else can.
There’s power in love to lift up and liberate when nothing else will.
There’s power in love to show us the way to live.”
While many of those watching the marriage of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, both in person and online, were stunned at the preacher’s unabashed call to the power of love, those of us who know our Presiding Bishop, were not surprised by the power, strength and topic of his sermon. Michael Curry embodies the love of Jesus. In moments of great celebration, as well as in times of great challenge, over countless years, I have never seen him waiver in his belief in God’s unconditional love for all.
The royal wedding was spectacular! It made me proud of our religious heritage. Some may want to bifurcate the charismatic preacher and the Gospel choir from the traditional Anglican liturgy. However, the truth is that all of it, and so much more, is deep in the DNA of who we are as Episcopalians. And along with it is our foundational belief that we proclaim in our Baptismal Covenant, to seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving our neighbor as ourself.
My friends, there is power in love. As Presiding Bishop Curry proclaimed, “We were made by a power of love. And our lives were meant and are meant to be lived in that love. That’s why we are here. Ultimately, the source of love is God. The source of all of our lives.”
May we all be inspired by our Presiding Bishop to live and share in that love with our neighbors, and in doing so, be a part of creating the Beloved Community.
